| I know what your thinking, "why would I buy grocery bags when the stores plastic bags are free ?" Well the ugly truth is that these so called "Free" bags come at a great cost to consumers as well as the environment. Over a billion single use plastic bags are given for free each day. But as the old saying goes, nothing comes for free. The actual cost paid by our environment and society for the convenience of unlimited, free, single-use plastic bags is astonishing. PRODUCTION The production of plastic bags requires petroleum and often natural gas, both non-renewable resources that increase our dependency on foreign suppliers. Drilling for these resources contributes to the destruction of fragile habitats and ecosystems around the world. The toxic chemical ingredients needed to make plastic bags causes pollution during manufacturing. The energy needed to manufacture and transport disposable bags eats up even more resources creating global warming emmissions. CONSUMPTION Retailers spend an estimated $4 billion on disposable plastic bags that they so-called give away for "free" but in reality their costs for these bags are passed on to the consumer in the form of higher prices. DISPOSAL In our oceans, hundreds of thousands of sea turtles, whales and other marine mammals die every year from eating plastic bags that they have mistaken for food thinking the bags are jellyfish. On land many cows, goats, and other mammals suffer the same fate when the accidentally ingest pastic bags while foraging for food.In our landfills a plastic bag will take 1000 years to degrade. As litter, they breakdown into tiny toxic bits contaminating our soil and water. Collection, hauling and disposal of plastic bag waste create an additional environmental impact. An estimated 8 billion pounds of plastic bags enter the waste stream every year in the USA alone clogging up our, already diminished landfill space. |
